Full movie description "The Andy Griffith Show Cyrano Andy":

Barney is struggling with how to act around new girlfriend Thelma Lou. Their first double date with Andy and Ellie is a disaster because he can't relax around her. When he takes her home, he won't even kiss her good night. He can talk to Andy about how he feels towards her but can't quite gather the nerve to pour his heart out to her. Andy goes over to talk to Thelma Lou on Barney's behalf but she later tells him that Andy called on her. Barney comes unglued and decides to take revenge by making a move on Ellie. Realizing they have a situation on their hands, Andy and Ellie devise a plan: Ellie will try and seduce Barney while Andy tries to seduce Thelma Lou, the key objective being to have the two run right into each other's arms. It works. Barney and Thelma Lou are shaken out of their timid approach to one another and, in a tender moment, finally confess that they love each other. Barney then confesses that he feels sorry for Andy losing out.

I liked this particular episode but have to admit it is one of the weaker ones from season one. That's because to make the show work, the usually nice folks of Mayberry (in particular, Thelma Lou) behave in ways that are inconsistent with their characters--something very atypical for the show. As a result, she comes off as a bit mean-spirited--something very unusual for the show.

This is the first episode to highlight Barney and Thelma Lou. While it's obvious that Barney cares for his girlfriend, he is a sap when it comes to romance and Thelma Lou is naturally frustrated. However, when she decides to make it appear as if Andy is interested in her in order to make Barney jealous, things backfire a bit--but end on a happy note.
